Cataloochee Valley Ride near Maggie Valley, NC
If you are staying in Maggie Valley you might want to decide to ride the bike over to Cataloochee Valley to see if there are any Elk in the fields. The views are breathtaking and much of the road is not paved and no guard rails making it even more breathtaking and a little adventurous . I would venture to say there are more curves per mile on that road than on the Tail of the Dragon at Deals Gap. Highly recommended to go but not with a loud muffler if you want to see elk.
Cataloochee Valley is also home to nine historic buildings, including a school, church, barn and several homes. The experimental release of elk into Great Smoky Mountains National Park began in February 2001 with the importation of 25 elk, In 2002, the park imported another 27 animals. All elk are radio collared and are monitored. By 2016, the number has grown to almost 200. Take caution when riding as this is a gravel mountain road
