He has been called a “Pioneer” of the Americana / Alt-Country genre. Punks\, Alt-Country fans\, and glam rockers alike agreed there was an honesty there\, an authenticity not built on outward style but inner substance. DESCRIPTION:Len Graham began his career in Newport Rhode Island in 1979 as a singer with the acoustic duo “Euphoria” he later became the manager for the critically acclaimed singer Natalie Merchant of “10\,000 Maniacs”. Ever restless\, one day Len sold his MG spitfire and fled to the Rocky Mountain National Park where he hunkered down with his songwriting craft and joined the ever-popular band “Load Limit”. Back to Connecticut where he and step-brother John Noble formed “Graham Noble”\, a band that would join Toy Caldwell and the “Marshall Tucker Band” during their 1985 tour. After that Len went solo and “Lenny Graham and the Phoenix” would release an EP and be touted by many a record label. He did eventually sign with an independent label in 1987. \nLater that year an appearance on “You Can Be a Star”\, the first of many a talent show to come\, would put him in touch with the Nashville music scene. On to Michigan and a second meeting with drummer Kenny Aronoff\, who at the time was with John Cougar Mellencamp\, helped him inch closer to realizing his dream. Then with everything in place including management teams on both coasts and after an appearance at the infamous “Bluebird Cafe” in Nashville and a chance encounter with David Olney who was later known as the grandfather of Americana music\, Len just walked away. \nHe kept on honing his craft and releasing his music through his publishing company “Summer Boy Music”. With songs from his double album “Chronicles” now streaming all throughout Europe and America\, Len is now content to be retired and nestled here in the Smoky Mountains with the trio “Smoky Blue Rain” Come and enjoy some songs and many a story from our now native son\,\nLen Graham. \n \n

Consisting of Couple Zach & Lori who met over their common love for Gillian Welch & Dave Rawlings and folk music as a whole. Zach who is originally from Knoxville and later moved to Nashville\, is heavily influenced by a wide range of musical genres. From the high lonesome sounds of Bill Monroe to the funky syncopated rythyms of James Brown\, Zach’s musical style reflects a unique blend of old & new. Lori is a North Carolina singer/song writer who grew up listening to Appalachian ballads and attending bluegrass festivals with her musical family. A fourth generation ballad singer herself she embraces the old songs while always eager to share her own. Learning many of the old songs from her Late uncle Bobby Mcmillon. Together the two make the perfect team for some truly expressive art through sound.

DESCRIPTION:Step out of your end-of-summer rut and experience the Annual Smoky Mountain Elk Fest!  The third annual celebration of Elk in the Smokies  is a family-friendly event full of music\, entertainment\, craft vendors\, and educational demonstrations. You can expect to find lots of great food and drinks\, guided hikes\, creekside demonstrations\, wildlife artists\, crafts\, and kid’s activities. \nProceeds from the Elk Fest will help us raise funds for habitat maintenance and create other ways to keep our elk protected and happy. \nElk used to be abundant throughout the Western North Carolina mountains\, but by the mid-1800s\, the population was wiped out due to overhunting and habitat loss. \nAfter extensive research by the Great Smoky Mountain National Park Service and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation\, wild elk were reintroduced into the Cataloochee Valley in 2001. The original herd consisted of 52 elk\, and over the years their numbers have grown to more than 150. \nAs the elk population continues to grow\, though\, there are some interaction issues when the elk end up in places they aren’t supposed to be—for instance\, in our local farmer’s fields. The blend of these cultural influences over time have given him a unique perspective on life and a singular approach to the art of music and what he contributes to it. His rather quirky origins give life to music with a difference\, a sound that is at once familiar yet different and new at the same time\, something that can’t be defined without first giving it a few listens.\nHaving spent most of his time fantasizing about\, or being\, a musician\, Mike has acquired skills and experience as a drummer\, percussionist\, singer/songwriter\, guitarist\, sound engineer and music producer. Throughout his career he has toured and recorded with some of the top performers in their fields culminating in his debut as a solo artist – The Blaxcotsman.\nWhile his current album\, Passing White\, is the best sounding introduction to his music\, Mike’s back catalog is also worthy of your attention. It includes a new take on the Simple Minds album New Gold Dream where he plays almost all the instruments and sings. SUMMARY:Steve "Piano Man" Whiddon With Angie Toomey
DESCRIPTION:Steve began playing piano at age 3 and there has been some slight improvement. After high school he performed in clubs\, restaurants\, honky tonk bars\, and anywhere else he could play for food\, tips\, drinks\, and various other  assorted methods of payment. He was even the organist for the Detroit Tigers for spring training games in the early and mid 90’s and never once caught a foul ball.\nHe later discovered that country clubs would trade meals and free golf in exchange for his musical services. Aha! Life was good! His waistline expanded but his golf game\nremained lousy.\nSomehow he found time to use what was left of his fragile brain to write some songs and then some more songs. Some rock\, some country\, and some nobody has figured out yet.\nIn 2001 Steve met Dave Magill\, a producer\, musician\, and studio wizard. The two hit it off immediately and started recording Steve’s songs in Dave’s studio. They continue to work together on many different projects.\nSteve lives in Maggie Valley\, North Carolina where he fishes\, hikes\, and loves the Smoky Mountains. His golf game remains the same.\n\nJoin us for an evening of live music with Steve on Thursday\, September 8 at 5:30 PM! It’s a free event\, with BBQ dinner available for $12. Wilderness Survival (also known as bushcraft) is the ability to utilize natural and limited materials in traditional ways to stave alive and escape danger. \nIn modern society\, learning wilderness survival skills is not only important for the occasional forays into dangerous environments\, but also helps in building confidence\, self-esteem\, and instilling a sense of self-knowledge while re-connecting with nature and our human past. \nWhile we might not think we need wilderness survival skills if we avoid nature\, there are still instances where we might need to call upon them including natural disasters\, getting lost in the woods\, extreme shifts in weather\, accidents causing some form of incapacitation\, and many other unforeseen circumstances. \nTherefore\, it is prudent and wise for every human to have at least a rudimentary capability in the basic skills of survival to ensure their continued existence. These include the ability to: \n\nBuild a fire\nBuild a shelter\nTie Knots\nNavigate without a GPS\nApply First Aid\nEvaluate gear and supplies\nMaster the essentials of hiking and camping.\n\nThe MSMHC is proud to announce the addition of acclaimed author\, outdoor survival expert\, record setting hiker and elite Wilderness Search and Rescue Team member\, Nancy East\, to our roster of expert artists for our 2022 programs. Nancy will launch the spring hiking season with a presentation on Friday night\, March 18\, describing her adventures as a Search and Rescue member. On Saturday\, March 19 Nancy devotes an entire day to a variety of the above mentioned wilderness survival topics to ensure your safety\, comfort and enjoyment as you create memorable experiences hiking in the Great Smokies. \nSpace is limited to ten students to guarantee individual attention and Nancy provides all materials needed for event.
