DESCRIPTION:HEIDI HOLTON\n\n\n\n\n     Deep in the heart of southern Appalachia\, sounds from the Mississippi Delta echo through the lush mountain air\, haunting the fretboard of Heidi Holton’s well-worn Gibson guitar. Original and fresh\, traditional with a contemporary flair\, Heidi is turning heads with her mastery of the music of the Deep South. Her songwriting shines like the sweet glistening sweat on the brow of a Piedmont preacher behind the pulpit on a sultry Sunday afternoon. Following in the footsteps of guitar-slingers like Memphis Minnie and Reverend Gary Davis\, Heidi Holton is making a name for herself in the international blues community. \n     A 15-year-old Heidi found a copy of Hot Tuna’s first album in her dad’s record collection\, and was so inspired by the elegant fingerstyle blues guitar of the legendary Jorma Kaukonen (Jefferson Airplane) that she bought a $60 guitar from a drug store in Ducktown\, TN and began to hone her skills. When an opportunity to study with Jorma arose a decade later\, Holton strapped an acoustic guitar to the back of her motorcycle and headed north from New Orleans to Ohio. She found a mentor and kindred spirit in Jorma and quickly became an accomplished finger picker and slide guitar player. With her musical skills on a new level\, Holton recorded her darkly seductive debut album\, “Mockingbird Blues” in 2016. \n     It wasn’t long before people began to take notice – including the iconic blues woman and national treasure Rory Block\, who produced Heidi’s sophomore release.  “Why Mama Cries” (released in 2018) includes Heidi’s damn near definitive version of the standard “You Got To Move\,” and positively brilliant Mississippi Fred McDowell-inspired original\, “Hardest Card To Play;” the whole album is a stunning step forward. Rory must’ve thought so too\, because the project forged a friendship that led to a whirlwind year of snowy road trips across the USA and into Canada. By the end of their latest wander\, Heidi had enough new material to begin the writing and recording process on her upcoming album\, “Black Strap Molasses\,” which was written\, recorded\, and produced at Rory’s home studio between their adventures together. \n     Heidi doesn’t perform so much as she casts a spell on her audience. There’s some serious voodoo going on in her live shows as she sways and moves to the sweet sting of her acoustic slide\, raising a hand in the air and stomping her foot. She holds the crowd in that raised hand; you could hear a pin drop. She’s got them. \n     Popular demand keeps Heidi busy playing about 150 shows a year to a wide variety of audiences. She recently completed a four week tour in Italy\, and plans to perform in the UK in the summer of 2019. She has opened for Jorma Kaukonen\, Rory Block\, and Roy Bookbinder and is a regular performer at the Arts and Minds Festival at the Fur Peace Ranch. DESCRIPTION:Anthony Edward Black has been a versatile musician and composer for decades\, known for his masterful skills as a bassist\, guitarist\, composer\, and producer. Based in Waynesville\, North Carolina\, Anthony’s career spans a remarkable range of genres and collaborations. \nMost recently recognized as a touring member of the legendary Marshall Tucker Band\, Anthony has shared stages with iconic names like Travis Tritt\, Dickey Betts\, and Lynyrd Skynyrd during their sold-out stadium Farewell Tour. His time with MTB included unforgettable performances at the Grand Ole Opry and numerous national tours. \nBefore that\, Anthony’s journey began with a deep love for music experimentation. He toured with two of the “big four” Nardcore bands—Stalag13 and Dr. Know—and performed alongside the avant-garde guitar legend Buckethead throughout the ’90s. A highlight of his career was playing with “Eyedentity\,” featuring the renowned Flora Purim\, Airto Moreira\, and Wah Wah Watson. \nAfter stepping away from the road in 2019 to focus on his family and solo career\, Anthony has been diving into exciting new projects. He’s currently crafting his first singer-songwriter album and a modern festival jazz album featuring an incredible cast of musicians. DESCRIPTION:Alan Lee Edwards has been a songwriter for over 30 years\, and became the main singer\, guitarist\, and songwriter for the band Lou Ford\, out of Charlotte\, NC. Punks\, alt. country fans\, and glam rockers alike agreed there was an honesty to Lou Ford\, an authenticity not built on outward style but inner substance. Their songs spoke mostly of the ebb and flow of personal relationships\, and of the existence\, most people of the south\, of the “middle class”\, immediately recognized as their own. They had critical respect\, too\, and from some of the best music magazines in the world — Uncut and Mojo both talked the band up breathlessly\, and they shared space on British “best of” compilation CDs with the likes of Lucinda Williams\, Richard Thompson and Paul Simon. Often lumped into the Americana catch-all\, they nonetheless mined the sunnier side of the street musically\, with Edwards’ biggest influences (Beach Boys\, Big Star\, Nick Lowe) never far from the surface. After Lou Ford\, Edwards created two albums and toured with his well received band The Loudermilks. \nAfter The Loudermilks folded\, Alan did as he had famously promised in song years before and took his things and moved up to the mountains. Edwards revisited his burgeoning back catalog of songs and become something of a road warrior. That said\, he has new music that represents a rebirth of sorts\, one that’s manifest in not one\, but two new albums\, Interpreting Heart Sounds Vol. I and Interpreting Heart Sounds Vol. II. Produced by Alan Lee Edwards and mixed by the legendary John Wood (the man behind the boards for Nick Drake\, Fairport Convention\, John Cale\, Squeeze\, and Richard and Linda Thompson)\, the new album is a major milestone in a career that has already spawned five albums. \nRecorded at the famed Echo Mountain Recording Studios in Asheville North Carolina\, both albums were engineered by Kenny Harrington\, mixed and mastered by the team at Well Made Music in Bristol\, TN.\, and pressed locally at Citizen Vinyl in Asheville. Vol. 1 is a band-oriented effort\, while Vol. 2 features a more stripped down sound with the addition of strings. The songs are both tender and enticing\, from the decidedly down home delivery of “Caroline” and the earnest and engaging “Ride On\,” to the reflective sounds of “John on the Run\,” “Mom (Always Liked You)” and “How Blue.” They epitomize the approach of an artist solely in control of his craft while inspired by honesty\, integrity\, creativity and craft. \nCome hear his new music at the Meadowlark in the SpeakEasy on February 8th. \n\nStarting at 7:00 pm in the Speakeasy\nCall 828- 926- 1717 for more information!
